What is page rank



PageRank is a way to measure web page’s importance. Sergey brin and Larry Page founder of Google created an algorithm to find the most important pages on the internet by checking the number of links leading to them. Search engine web crawler view your inbound links pointing to your website and consider them as votes of recommendation for your content.

Websites are given PageRank score from 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.  Higher the PageRank, higher is score and credibility given to the webpage.
Note : Higher PageRank do not guarantee you higher SERP results. If that would be the case then PR10 like “Adobe Download” “USA.gov” “Twitter.com” websites will be in top of SERP results for every keyword results.

Why links pointing to website makes them important for PageRank?

Links pointing to a website makes the website good PageRank website because people link to relevant content and we can say pages with more links makes them better resources than pages that nobody link.
If you have a brand new website then you will have 0 PageRank.
PR 5 websites have good number of inbound links.
PR 3 to PR 4 websites have fair amount of inbound links.

History of page rank


PageRank was named after Larry Page who is one of the founders of Google, PageRank was patented by Stanford in 1995. Before the discovery of PR search engines links to page that has highest density of keyword, which was very dangerous for search results as people can easily repeat their keywords again and again in order to get higher SERP results. Higher ranking means higher probability of the site being reached in SERP results because they are linked quantitatively to a number of times in unique domains plus they are linked to popular web pages.

Link juice concept means when a website links to your web page or you can link internally from one of your page to another, then the link passes PageRank points and this passing of points is known as “Link Juice” transfer. Every webpage can pass a limited amount of link juice

What factors does the link juice depend upon?

Basically there are two major factors on which the amount of link juice passed depends.
1.    Total number of links on the web page that are passing PageRank
2.    The number of PageRank points of the web page housing the link

Explain link juice transfer in simple terms

In easy way we can say John has a web page of “Flower delivery” and that web page consist of 10 points. Mary has a webpage of “Different category of Rose”. John points a link of web page of Mary on his “Flower Delivery” webpage. Now the page different category of Rose will get 10 points transferred from John’s webpage. Similarly if John points total 5 websites on his webpage of Flower Delivery than it will transfer 2 points on each website.

High PR websites are seen as authority in the industry. High PR can make you a brand.
Page Rank can be effective when two website with same quality content, same on page optimization, and same inbound and outbound links but with different Page rank are to appear in SERP than web page with higher PR will appear higher in search results.
New content with no page rank can appear higher on search results because of Google’s Caffeine update. But it is seen that after a period of time search position gets replaced by high PR websites.
